Ups and Downs

Life has ups and downs, that is for sure. This weekend in particular, a concentration of both wonderful ups, and horrific downs, demonstrates the more ephemeral qualities of life and only proves that we should enjoy take great joy in whatever ups we have. The downs are not far behind.

To get less metaphorical, and more literal, I enjoyed lots of ups and downs on Friday in the form of bouncing at a local trampoline park with my two barn buddies. If you have ever wanted to have a fun workout, go try one of these. I have to say that my heart was pounding faster after 5 minutes of this than it has on cross country in a long time! And that is saying something! For your viewing hilarity, watch me attempt to do a flip for the first time in ages:

Saturday was a bit less joyful. Tyler and I received a scary phone call regarding his father, and spent the day in the hospital. Unfortunately, things remain in a pretty scary state and I ask you all to pray for him and the family.

In our thoughts and prayers

In our thoughts and prayers

Beyond this, I got some much needed equine therapy, and we both tried to watch the Super Bowl, but found we could not really enjoy ourselves with so much weighing on our hearts.

Without sounding like too much like Negative Nancy, the coming week looks gray. Again, literally with a forecast of 4 days of rain, and metaphorically in the questions regarding our loved ones.

I’ll leave you with a verse that brings me some peace at the moment, and hope it does the same for you.

Matthew 6:34
Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Snow days

Well, it happened. Hell Raleigh (referring to the idom, I heart Raleigh just FYI) froze over, as is wont to happen once in a while. Just over an inch of the white fluffy stuff has sent the city into a frenzy of the “er-mer-gerd, snow!” sort, and has me camped out at home. Anyways, anybody with access to a news channel knows about the snow, so I won’t gab on about that.

So I didn’t get to go see the pony, boo. Instead a kind friend took photos of him!

Seriously, how cute is he with his snow mustache.

I did, however, get to snap a few quick pics of Drake outside, with the most beautimous sunset….

Oh my goodness was he ever having fun!

And then I was able to get this one good one before the sun completely disappeared!

Hopefully next year I will get my act together and take proper photos, but we’ll see!

Meanwhile, since I have been stuck outside and have been feeling surprisingly domesticated, I thought I would share with you the. best. spinach. thing. ever. Seriously, it’s delicious. I have eaten 3/4 of it today, so I should know.

Yeah, I had a piece before I could take a pic. My bad.

Yeah, I had a piece before I could take a pic. My bad.

Here’s the link to this cheesy spinach-feta pie that is oh-so-easy, and skinnytaste approved! I’ve also been busy making Yorkshire pudding (part of the best and cheapest dinner EVER) and Mulled wine. Perhaps tomorrow I will post the ‘recipes’ for those if it interests anyone!

Anyways, hope everyone stays warm! Be safe y’all!

Sound!

Foster is finally sound again! Saturday was about 40 degrees, a veritable heat wave compared to the rest of the week, but because of the 25-30 mph wind gusts, I decided to lunge instead of ride. Foster had a great time bucking and cantering for the first couple minutes, and then jogged around happily before being turned out.

Wind up the rear!

Wind up the rear!

I also took the opportunity to take my trailer in for a well-deserved service. While the cost of 4 new tires may have set me back a horse show or two (or three or four?), it is worth knowing that Foster’s vehicle of choice is ship shape and ready to go!

Foster's Chariot, ready to rock and roll!

Then today, we were blessed with beautiful weather and our first ride in ages! He was a little weak, and a little stiff, but it felt great to sit on my pony again! We focused on efforts on stretching and moving forward, and after a little Ali hopped on and I got to see how he went from the ground. I cannot say how happy I was to see how well he is using his back end, the fluidity of his gaits and the flexibility of his hocks! Ali professed that this might be our year to really accomplish things, and I have to admit I have high hopes! We’ll spend the next couple rides continuing to stretch and get a little fitness back, and see how he feels from there.

I am still hopeful that we can get in a couple cross country schoolings and maybe even a schooling show before our horse trials in a month. But the last couple weeks have shown me that anything is possible!

30 Things

Obviously I am running out of updates on Foster (although he’s looking almost 100% again!), so I stole this 30 questions idea from Polka Dot Periodical! Fun!

1: If your horse could talk what would they say? What would they be like?
“Hi, you’re fun. Can I taste you?” If Foster were a person, I imagine he would be the friendly All-American type that can be a bit of a prankster.

2: If you were a horse, what would you look like (color, markings, etc), what discipline would you do, and what would you be like to ride?
Um, I would probably be one of those athletic draft crosses, with some sort of quirky marking. And probably would be a dressage snob!

3: How many barns have you ridden at?
I’ve lived on two farms, but since moving to Raleigh I have had a tough time with boarding- 6 boarding barns so far.

4: What kind of bay do you prefer? (bright bay, blood bay, etc)
Bright bay!

5: Can you braid a horse’s mane? Tail?
Just manes, and sadly, I can’t even use yarn. Need to learn!

Pretty!

Pretty!

6: Do you believe that you have to fall off in order to be a good rider?
Not necessarily, but I think in order to be brave you need to understand that you can fall off and still get back on.

7: What do you think is more important: eq or effective riding?
Eventing is all about effective riding, though I have been trying to improve my eq as well!

8: Are there any “horse couples” at your barn?
Nope!

9: Favorite treat to feed your horse?
Carrots- always have to have a bag handy

10: Silly quirks your horse has.
Foster is very ‘oral’- nothing is safe from his mouth! He will pick up gloves, sprays, even the mounting block if I’m not looking. He also has a past of resting one hoof on large things- like the top of a picnic table, or a roll top…

11: Strangest thing you’ve fed your horse.
Foster likes cheese-its, which are a horse show staple for me. Otherwise, I used to give Ivan the occasional beer or hard cider 🙂

Woodchuck Cider, yum..

Woodchuck Cider, yum..

12: Have you ever made any horse friends through the internet?
I really enjoy interacting with the people who comment on my blog! Can I call you guys friends? 😉

13: Would you buy horse furniture?
Our living room has a fox hunting/equestrian theme, so I’m going with yes.

14: Funniest horsey moment
Oh gosh, there are so many. Once, in my younger years, I thought I would be cool and slap my horse on the butt to send him away in the pasture (not in an abusive way!). Well, he took off quite dramatically, spraying me head-to-toe in mud. I was so filthy I was not allowed to come inside!

15: Post a picture of your horse (or any horse) making a silly face that you got on camera!

A nerdy moment with Foster, caught on camera by Julie :)

16: What’s a moment with horses that you wished you caught on camera?
I wish I had photos of my Training XC run from high school. But this makes me even more glad to have our schooling over training jumps last year caught on camera!

Training Jump, yay!

Training Jump, yay!

17: How old was the youngest horse you’ve met?
I was fortunate to grow up on a breeding farm, so I’ve seen lots of babies being born. Something you don’t forget!

18: How old was the oldest horse you’ve met?
My first pony was around 30 (maybe older?) when she moved on to greener pastures.

19: Opinion on colorful tack? (like red or blue)
Saddle pads, yes. Polos or leg coverings, yes. Browbands, bridles, boots, no!

Don't do it!

Don’t do it!

20: Have you ever tried horse treats? Hay?
Definitely tried grain, and the occasional horse treat. Who has eaten hay?

21: Have you ever felt like giving up on a horse?
I don’t want to say that I have given up on a horse, but I have definitely learned to recognize when a horse just isn’t meant to do certain things. My last horse Ivan, was never going to be an eventer because he was not brave enough. Merry was never going to be a great dressage horse. And in both those cases, it was in the best interest for both to put them in a different home where their talents would be appreciated. It’s hard, but I think it’s made me a better horsewoman.

22: Tell the story about the horse that you first felt “click” immediately with you (and if you can’t remember, most recent)
I can remember the most recent, and that is of course with Foster. I had been looking obsessively for a horse for over two months (as in, following ever horse classified site in existence, hourly) and had seen nothing that really matched my criteria enough to go see. Then I saw Foster (at that time Pilgrim), who wasn’t quite old enough, but stood out enough that I jumped in my car and drove the 6ish hours by myself to go see him. The rest, obviously, is history.

Foster's sale pic- how could I NOT go see him!

23: Ever ridden side-saddle? How was it?
I rode side-saddle on an elephant once, because I was wearing a skirt. It was awkward, but cool.

Yup, not the most lady like mount.

24: Most interesting place you’ve ridden at.
I took a cross country lesson in Ireland on a horse named Crow. We jumped these massive fences out among herds of Connemara ponies- it was amazing!

25: What kind of horse do you like? (sport, stock, endurance, etc)
I have a definite sport horse type- uphill, with a little substance, short backed and preferably a little flash!

26: Do you feel like you have more patience with horses than people?
Oh yes.

27: Is the horse you ride very vocal?
No, though he tried it for one show and it was awful.

28: Ever ridden in the sunset?

I ride after work so I feel like I’m always riding when the sun is setting!

29: How do you like a horse’s mane? (roached, pulled, long, etc)
Short and tidy

30: What is your dream name for a horse?
I’ve been saving the name ‘Glenfiddich’ (it’s lucky to name horses after booze!) for a horse sometime in the future.. barn name Glen!

Snow (aka the wet continues)

Normally, snow would have me excited and thinking how pretty everything is! So white! So bright! So beautiful!

Bah humbug.

Right now, snow means that it will take longer to dry out, and prolong the time between now and when I can get back in the saddle. And right now, that’s something I’m not handling very well *insert more virtual foot stamping here*. Foster lost his wrap last night and because I swear it was blizzarding (no we didn’t get much accumulation, but it was really coming down!), I didn’t go out to soak his foot (it’s 26 miles one way, don’t judge me!). Thank goodness for good barn friends that can check on him!

Foster all bundled up against the cold

But today it will be definitely safe enough to go out and see what state the pony is in. That is, besides continuing to be grody and shaggy, and not groomed decently enough to be seen in public.

So much for that!

Image

Foster and his most favorite friend, Baron, playing over the fence

If I could virtually stamp my foot, I would. Last week I had one ride on a sound but increasingly unfit horse, and then pouted about the weather for the next several days. Then yesterday, as I’m making plans for the next 5 gloriously sunny days, I trot off, and something’s wrong. Headbobbing, ugly, three legged wrong.

My well founded guess is that it’s another abcess, but in the other front foot. All the same symptoms- lots of wet conditions and no heat, no swelling, but head bobbing specifically on the front right- therefore I’m going to treat it as such (unfortunately the farrier is out of town). So we will be more than likely, missing our first jumper show that is next weekend, and cutting it closer than I would like in preparing for our first horse trial. In the mean time, the silver lining is that at least it will be sunny, and therefore dry up all the crud that keeps making my poor pony lame.

More soaking…

Other than that, I’m off today on an adventure to take my trailer in for a well needed service!

Please send more sound thoughts to Foster, and maybe generous thoughts to the trailer guys so I have enough money to compete in the spring after they’re done!

So Sorry…

I really haven’t forgotten the blog, I swear. I have, however, been busy enough at work that I haven’t been able to squeeze a post in. And oh, yeah, nothing has really happened that would really interest anybody anyhow.

At least ponykins is no longer lame! Unfortunately, the craptastic weather we have been having means I couldn’t ride this week, and am hopeful I can sit on him tomorrow. *Hopeful*.

My thoughts on mud.

My thoughts on mud.

This weekend should be a little more interesting, as I’m going to the rodeo with the barn girls, and then tomorrow we will be celebrating a friend’s birthday with a fun dinner. Also, if my horse’s mane is not pulled by Monday, someone throttle me. I’m getting embarrassed.

WTRodeo

Anyways, sorry for the short post! Y’all enjoy your MLK weekend!

Are you superstitious?

Image

If his song just started playing in your head, you’re welcome.

I don’t consider myself and overly superstitious person, but there are a couple things I ‘believe’ that could definitely fall into that category. And there are other logical, seemingly normal people I know that also hold to ideas that are decidedly superstitious as well. Just a couple days ago, Tyler was debating on whether or not to watch a Carolina game because he wasn’t sure if he was going to be good luck for them.

Image

Carolina Juju, brought to you (or not) by Tyler

I’ve always kind of wanted some sort of token that I could believe in that would be my good luck charm, but try as I might nothing seems to want to be my lucky ‘thing’. Oh well. I do personally think though that bad things come in three’s, and the last 18 hours (in which this occurred) is proof of that to me. I also can’t help but feel uncomfortable about walking under ladders, opening umbrellas indoors, or breaking mirrors, though I don’t think I would make it a point to go out of my way to avoid doing those things.

Where oh where are me lucky charms?

Where oh where are me lucky charms?

So, friendly readers, what do you think? Lucky charms? Superstitions?

Abhorrent Abcesses

Grumpy

Abhorrent abcesses are abhorrent.

Sorry for being incognito for a couple days. I’ve been slogging through the orientations, introductions, and efforts of trying not to look like the newest twit on the block at the new job, and unfortunately spending my evenings treating poor Foster’s abcess.

Soaking the foot

I sat on him Sunday and after trotting off found him head-bobbing lame on his left front. It’s been super wet and gross recently, so it was no surprise when the farrier confirmed that he had an abcess that came out through the bottom of his foot. After a couple days of treating, Foster is still in that pathetic hobbling stage that will hopefully give way to a magically happy prancing pony soon. The only positive note to the whole thing is that I am blessed with a horse who is content to stand still (or paw with his good foot) for a whole 20 minutes, and save my fingers from the frostbite that might occur should I be forced to play with water in hellish brutal frickin’ freezing subarctic such cold weather.

happy pony

As a result of recent weather conditions and the abcess, we will unfortunately be foregoing our first Combined Training show next weekend. Luckily, there are a couple jumper shows in two weeks so *hopefully* we can get out of the barn and go somewhere soon! Until then, thinking happy thoughts for my pony who is stuck in his stall today, but will be getting lots of treats and pats tonight!
