Kitchen Makeover

Or should I say, almost makeover.

We’ve just crossed another one of the major house goals off the list, and it feels good. Really good.

Of course our giant purchase came right before everything hit the fan with Foster, but still, I can’t say that I regret it- I’ve been dreaming of this since we bought the house.

What is this giant purchase? Well you might have guessed it by now- new countertops. New granite countertops.

now

Before you can appreciate the now, though, let’s look at part of the original kitchen.

Admittedly only part of the kitchen, but still, you get the idea

Admittedly only part of the kitchen, but still, you get the idea

We took down the wallpaper below the chair rail, ditched the hanging light, painted the walls a neutral green (Garden Shed from the Martha Stewart collection at HD), and added hardwood floors. Then got new appliances, added new hardware to the cabinets, and landed here:

before kitchenThe worst part about these plastic white countertops isn’t how chincy they seem, or how dated they look- no, it’s how easily they stain. And as evidences by the glass in the picture, we like our red wine in the house on a hill. You know what doesn’t pair well with a glass of red wine? White, easily stained countertops. And let’s not even get started on how disgusting the old white ceramic sink looked. No amount of bleaching could help that, and I was too embarrassed to picture it here.

slab

The husband checks our slab for straightness

So we found a reputable local source for granite and picked out our slab. The company came out and traced our current configuration, creating a template that they would then use to cut our granite. It’s still amazing to me that all those pieces came out of the slab pictured- it’s a puzzle to use every little piece and avoid seams everywhere.

After tearing out the old countertops

A week later, our new countertops were ready, and were installed in just a couple short hours. We installed a new faucet to match our new undermounted stainless (stainless, how bout that for a concept!) steel sink and voila! It feels like a new(er) kitchen.

Now just to paint the cabinets!

Coffee Table Chaos

Ready for another potentially boring house post? Here we go!

I recently hinted at things going on in the house on the hill, and one of them is as small, or large, as changing out our living room set.

Our old set was inherited from the husband’s sister, and was a Pottery Barn coffee table and matching side table that also happened to go with my fabulous craigslist hutch, probably my most cherished piece of furniture at the moment.

1

However, over the years the coffee table got a little dinged up, as is wont to happen when you it gets as much loving as ours did. Jackson the cat also developed the unfortunate habit of hiding himself in the drawer when company came over (he’d climb into it from below somehow). When I knew we were expecting someone, I started leaving the drawer ajar, otherwise he would stay stuck in there, with no way of  getting him out (lest you break him in half), for hours on end. I was ready for a change- something preferably without drawers.

I knew I wanted something in the wood + metal department, to again go with the hutch as well as a sofa table my family built for us from reclaimed lumber, but finding something simple, without weird woodwork or metal framing, was surprisingly difficult.

Then recently we decided to take our formerly online search on the road and found not one, but two sets that actually seemed attractive.

Charger tables

The first set was a bit outside the “simple” vision I had in mind, but the husband was in love with the rollers on the bottom- we could each eat our dinner on a table (our habit most nights) and no more hitting him in the knees to reach my short arms! Look, no drawers! I hemmed and hawed and said yes, let’s do it.

Charger table

One of the coffee table pieces is missing because it had a defect, so you’ll have to use your imagination

But something about it just didn’t suit me once we got it in the actual space. Yes, it was practical, and functional, but it also seemed really dark, especially combined with the brown leather couch. Also in practice I wasn’t digging how light they felt weight-wise, for the money we spent. So back we went to the store, to return the set and pick up the other tables I had been eyeing.

Denmark coffee table

Isn’t she beautiful?

Although I absolutely loathe wishy-washyness (new word creation?), especially in myself, I am super pleased with the overall effect of the new(est) coffee table set, and feel it was worth going back for. It’s simple, feels like a quality piece, and is just the right size as to not overwhelm the space.

Morning light playing tricks again, will update with a better picture soon

Since this is my first place that I really feel is mine, and worth decorating, there’s been some experimenting to figure out what we like and don’t like. Even the little details like coffee table can feel like big decisions. I suppose that’s part of the fun, if you’re an HGTV junkie like myself. Now just to sell the old Pottery Barn set!

Am I alone in that search for the elusive right piece? Is there something in your house that you are updating and struggling to find the right match? What furniture piece does your household tend to revolve around?

Pillow Talk

I won’t lie, just titling this post makes me feel a little antsy, like if I don’t run and go do something rugged and dirty then I might be taken over by urges to bake cupcakes in a frilly apron. Someone save me. But hey, at least I won’t be whinging about my horse for a day.

Throw pillows, all the throw pillows!

Throw pillows, all the throw pillows!

About a month ago I decided there was something the house needed, and that thing came in the form of stuffed pieces of cloth to adorn my furniture. Yeah.

The sun room looks a little more loved

The sun room looks a little more loved

Still, even though it was my mission, I cannot tell you how silly I felt making the husband compare pillows with me, forcing him to put up with my external debate regarding texture, color, and price (why, oh why are pillows so stupidly expensive!).

Morning light playing tricks on me, but you get the gist

Morning light playing tricks on me, but you get the gist

For whatever reason though, it gives me some small semblance of pleasure having them around the house. Like maybe that throw pillow might be just what I needed to convince someone I have my house entirely put together. Like maybe I’m one step closer to becoming some kind of eventing Martha Stewart.

Am I alone here? Does anyone else appreciate little accents like this? Or is this possibly the lamest (insert bitter laugh here) post ever?

Bathroom Renovations

The master bathroom in this house has been… an adventure. Starting back just months after we purchased the house, we noticed a soft spot underneath the disgusting white linoleum. With visions of falling through through the ceiling into the kitchen below, we replaced the plywood and put down octagonal tile, and with that the bathroom renovation officially began.

Classic 90's paper here

Classic 90’s paper here, there, and everywhere

Months later we revisited the room, this time taking down the ivy print wallpaper from all the walls. A light fixture also came down at that time, and I can’t even remember why.

Before: Down to drywall, mismatched knobs, missing lights, and busted cabinets

Before: Down to drywall, mismatched knobs, missing lights, and busted cabinets

Because then it sat. For months. Other projects took precedence, and we hid the bathroom from visitors at all costs.

When Uncle Sam came through with tax returns, we knew exactly which room needed the most loving. The husband was absolutely fed up even thinking about all of the work required, but I was beyond excited to finally have the light, airy bathroom of my dreams.

After a bevy of painters, plumbers, and electricians, and a bit of installation work by the husband and myself, I can finally say- It is finished.

See for yourself!

It was a long time coming, but I am just in love with the results. What was once a forever-in-progress mismatched disaster is finally my personal spa and little oasis!

Today’s the Day

As if the universe was trying to make things easier for me, it just so happens that my mother and my husband share the same birthday. In fact, there are many shared birthdays between our families- his sister and my brother, his grandmother and my father… Anyways. Luckily I was already good at remembering birthdays, but I’ll take any universal help I can get.

But before I get to wine and dine my beloved tonight, and pester him about what he’ll be blogging about next, I have a rather important appointment this morning.

No grumpy Foster photos today sorry

You guessed it- Mister Fosterpants is getting himself scoped.

I only wish I could have done it last week, or even the moment I decided to scratch from the show. But alas, spring shots dominated the vet’s schedule and so wait we did.

I am desperate to see ulcers today, because the alternative to me is going down a rabbit hole of what-if’s and why’s that I’d much rather avoid.

A day of change! Today’s the day!

2015 Goals

It’s now January 2015, which means a theoretical new start, and new resolutions and goals to be made. Some of the below list should be completely do-able, others, a little more dreamy but possible if luck stays with us and we’re dedicated to the effort. Here’s our list of hopeful accomplishments for the year!

For the Horse:

  • Here’s the big one! Move up to Training!
Aiming for a May unrecognized horse trials at CHP. By then I hope we can come to grips with jumping more consistently again (boo daylight savings time) and hopefully have some Training CT’s under our belt. Date may move because, well, horses.
  • Increase strength in haunches
    Cavaletti work here we come.
  • Walk-Canter-Walk transitions
    which hopefully leads to….
  • Lead changes?
Maybe! But it also leads to…
  • Completing a Second Level dressage test with a score over 63%
A lofty goal for sure, but might be possible by the end of the year, if our schedule works out.
  • Get a 7 on a lengthening
Which is going to be hard for my pony.. but we’ll try!
Preparing for Training, I hope.

Preparing for Training, I hope.

For me:

  • Be a better competitor
By this I mean, get to the damn warm up ring with plenty of time, get to the start box with at least 1 minute to spare, put together a first-aid kit just for shows
  • Stop over-thinking the distance
I’m irritating the you-know-what out of myself for overanalyzing the spot- looking forward to hopefully not doing this so much in 2015
  • Stop overthinking people
Let it go, let it go!
  • Insert annoying weight-loss resolution here!
I’ve got a beach vacation in February (hopefully) and a sexy bridesmaid dress in April- motivation!

Frozen4

For the House:

  • Granite countertops in the kitchen!!
Please happen! Because I’m. So. Excited.
  • Aerate + seed front and back yard
So we’re not the worst lawn in the neighborhood
  • Paint upstairs hallway
Because red wine stains are not the color-du-jour
  • Paint the NC State Room
Let’s face it, the Carolina room should never have gotten that much of a lead.
  • Be better about blogging about the house!
Since 2 posts a year kind of makes the blog’s title a joke.
Better grass for Drake, please.

Better grass for Drake, please.

Happy 2015 to all, and may you accomplish all you set out to do this year!

2014 Accomplishments: The House

I have completely neglected blogging about the house this year, even though there have been lots of big changes.

My only house detailed post this year includes the following projects:

  • Glass in the fireplace (the now functional fireplace has been very helpful when the heat goes out!)
  • Hardwood floors in kitchen
  • New laminate floor in sunroom

Outside, we started with the patio, and the sunroom, since that’s the outdoor area we use the most. As you can see in the Before picture, it was looking a little unloved to begin with, but a bit of paint, lattice, and mulch, and voila! An outdoor space we can enjoy even more.

Patio_Before_AfterOne of the things I missed most about our former home was my giant rose bush, so that was definitely on my list for landscaping success. I also added my potted herbs- mint, a citronella plant (now sadly deceased), and the third pot now contains a rosemary bush. As you can see, the mulch is currently not defined, but next spring I intend to put down a landscaping border to keep it all contained.

Patio2_Before_AfterWhen fall finally rolled around, we pulled out the big guns. I’m extremely fortunate to have a father who not only owns a Bobcat, but is also proficient in grading and finds ‘small’ projects like ours to be fun. So as soon as it became cool enough to plant grass, my parents came up for the weekend and we reduced the backyard to mud dirt.

Husband stomping down dirt in his new truck

Husband stomping down dirt in his new truck

The husband’s brand new (to us) truck came in pretty handy that day, and we took 2,100 pounds of debri (rocks, weeds, unusable nature stuff) to the dump. Then I came in the next day to seed. Of course, the house is on a hill, and of course it was pouring so hard that a seed spreader couldn’t make it through the mud- so I donned a rain coat and spread seed by hand, swearing and sliding all over the place. I’m sure our neighbors found that a sight to see!

Since these photos were all taken from different positions, a star marks a couple trees that are consistent throughout.

Another view of before and after

So now Drake has lots of space to run around!

After: Drake has grass to run around on!

In the front yard, a similar process took place. It’s so nice not to have the most embarrassing front yard in the neighborhood anymore!

frontyard

The front yard- before: landscaping gone wild; after: bare but manicured!

Then inside, only a couple more projects have been taken care of since getting the hardwoods put in.

The first was the bathroom, which always reminded me of Mary Poppin’s carpet bag. I had a vision for a navy bathroom, so we essentially gutted it and began anew. For a 6′ x 6′ room, the bathroom reno took forever. Someone even walked out on us after giving up on the wallpaper removal. What a nightmare.

New paint, toilet, chrome fixtures, and black vanity

And then most recently, all those white appliances in the kitchen have been updated to shiny new stainless steel- thanks Black Friday for the good deals!

Hooray new appliances!

Hooray new appliances!

Whoo! That’s a lot done in 2014! Definitely a resolution for next year – be better about house blogging!!

2014 Goals: Progress Check

Where the heck did this year go? Honestly, times has flown by, and now that we are officially 3/4 through 2014, it’s time to check in and see how we’re doing.

Original goals as outlined in this post:

Move up to Novice! Check!

Move up to Novice! Check!

For Fosterpants:

  • Move up to Novice
  • Final score under 35 at Novice
  • Nail canter transitions (we kind of interrupted this one by changing his complete way of going, so still a work in progress)
  • Trot lengthenings
  • Master trakehner fences
  • Coffin combinations
  • Conditioning work (no conditioning-specific routine yet, but preparing for show by getting fit is still happening)
Wood floors for the win

Wood floors for the win

For the House:

  • Landscape front and backyard
  • Kitchen transformation
  • Replace grody couch

For Me:

  • Calcium supplements
  • Not be Red Bull Zombie  (we’ll pretend. Still have to caffeinate at horse shows)
  • Be more positive (Eh, it’s been a rough year in some ways.. still working on it!)

That’s a lot checked off our list, but still work to be done through the fall and winter. Adding to the list and getting a little more specific, here’s what I would like to get accomplished in the next few months.

Foster, Foster, Foster:

  • Lengthenings, and lengthening-to-collected transitions
  • Keep hacking away at canter transitions
  • School corners – showjumping style
  • Angled fences/combinations
  • School chevron if at all possible
  • Introduce conditioning program
  • Clip all the fur!
Canter canter canter

Canter canter canter

House:

  • Watch the grass grow 🙂

Design:

  • Wrap up current Farm Logo project for client
  • Edit Bridal Shoot photos
  • Create specific blog for Design work

It’s going to be a busy, busy winter!

Around the House: Spring Updates

This spring we have been busy busy trying to get some big goals accomplished! Namely, these include fixing the fireplace and remodeling the kitchen, half bathroom, and sun room. Now, we are about halfway through these projects, which means everything is a little catty-wampus, but it’s a step in the right direction…

Before: no glass, no logs, and a pet gate to keep the furbabies away… Now: Glass and a safe, functioning fireplace!

Out with the white, and in with the laminate!

Out with the white, and in with the laminate!

And then, I’m getting a little ahead of myself, but here’s what’s going on with the kitchen!

The floors still need staining, but Drake approves of the progress so far!

The floors still need staining, but Drake approves of the progress so far!

Of course, as far as the kitchen goes, the new floors mark 1/4 of the whole remodel being complete. Eventually, the goal is to put in new countertops, update the cabinets with paint and crown molding, and replace the white appliances. You might say it’s a work in progress!

Lots more changes outside happening as well, but that’s another post!

Resolution Check-In

photo 1 (5)

Since we’re about to end the first quarter of 2014, it seems a good time to see how we’re doing (or not doing) on our resolutions for the year. Let’s take a look 🙂

The Horse

Resolution 1: Move up to Novice with final score below 35 (or >67% in dressage)
We have gotten so close to this… or rather, the dressage score. Our score at the only Horse Trials this year is not worth noting, since I goofed so badly at the end of the XC course. If I hadn’t, we would have finished on that 35. At the Combined Training a couple weeks ago, we got a 66% in dressage… So this one is definitely doable, but not accomplished yet!

Resolution 2: Nail canter transitions
Well, this one we haven’t worked on pretty much at all. I’ve been babying him because of his fitness/condition and so avoided anything tough, like making him use his hind end to transition rather than his neck. With that said, he has actually gotten 7’s on them at the two shows this year! Sure surprised me!

Resolution 3: Not be embarrassed by lack of trot lengthenings
Nope, haven’t even touched this. Soon, hopefully!

I should have added 'not do shit braids' to my resolution list...

I should have added ‘not do shit braids’ to my resolution list…

The House

Resolution 1: Landscape front and backyard
We’ve made lots of progress in the backyard, taking out the big mamajama pine tree and lots and lots of scruffy small stuff. Now what we’re looking at is 6″+ of leaf mold/debris in most areas, that will have to be hauled away before we can seed. We’re trying to get this done soon before the summer hits and nothing grows, else we’ll be waiting till fall!

Resolution 2: Kitchen Transformation
Oh, this one I am *so* excited about! Right now we are collecting quotes for all the different projects, and hopefully we will have either wood floors or granite countertops by the summer! Squee!!

Resolution 3: Replace grody couch
Done!! The cats kind of pushed this one along, as *somebody* (cough, Elliot), decided to let us know he had a UTI by peeing on the couch, thus grodying said grody couch to the point that we didn’t want to even sit on it. We have now replaced it with a pretty new leather couch! Yay!

Hardwoods in the kitchen? Yes please!

Hardwoods in the kitchen? Yes please!

The Rest

Resolution 1: Take calcium supplements
So far so good! I found these caramel flavored ones that are like a little treat for me! Easy peezy!

Resolution 2: Not be a Red Bull zombie
Hahahahaha. Nope!

Resolution 3: Be more positive
Making some progress! Headed in the right direction, at the very least 🙂

A surprise outing for the husband's birthday, in which I proved I cannot bowl worth a crap, but did not embarrass myself otherwise!
